2011 BPEX WINNERS!

Gammon Winners! October 2011 we scooped the 'Best in Show' BPEX award for our gammon steaks, apparently very unusual for gammon to win this award, this means we were 'Best regional winners' (click on the pic to the left to see a larger image). This means next year we will be travelling to London for the national competition. We also scooped awards Gold for our faggots! Silver for our middle cut bacon all home cured and for our pork sausages.

Our history

profile

G.Mitchard and Sons began trading in 1913 when Gilbert Mitchard took over the butchers business which had already been started at Elm Terrace. The Terrace was built around 1900 so we assume the business was started then. Gilbert moved his family from the Frome Hill area of Radstock to Westfield. During this period, Gilbert was working by night as a miner and butchering by day but this situation soon had to change thus he became a full time butcher. He had 5 children, 2 sons and 3 daughters who all contributed to the business.

In the early 1920s Glbert had his own slaughter house built in Westfield which enabled him to slaughter his own meat. He was joined by his elder son Leonard, who became a very good slaughter man and handled that side of the business. His younger son Gilbert John (or Jack),also joined the business. When war broke out, Jack had to join the RAF and so Leonard stayed at home to run the business.

After the war Len left to start his own business at Purton near Swindon and Jack continued at Westfield with his wife Phillys, who had two sons and one daughter. Brian the eldest was pulled out of Bruton Sexey's in 1958 to join the family business. He married Barbara in 1965 and they have worked together since and have two son's and one daughter. Chris the eldest son joined the business when he was 18 and is now a partner in the business. Chris is married to Sarah and has two daughters.

What else we offer

Hog Roasts

We provide a hog roast service - we cook the pig in our own large oven that we've had specially built (to cook a pig takes 7 hours). Timing the cooking to meet your meal time, we take it straight from our oven to your party, we place it on our half oil drum charcoal burners, which keep it piping hot while we serve. We also supply cut bread rolls and home cooked apple sauce and stuffing, as you require. We say that on average a whole pig will feed about 200 people but we can supply half a pig or legs of pork to suit your requirements. We will also cook lambs and rolled pieces of beef. We're well experienced - weddings, birthday parties, christenings, whatever the occasion a hog roast is always welcome! Give us a ring for prices and discuss how we can help!
